The miraculous and perhaps somewhat dangerous thing about photographs is that they can tell whatever story the person behind the lens wants to tell. My favorite kinds of stories to tell are the human ones, the real ones that might be a bit messy sometimes, and especially the stories of mothers. It’s such an incredible honor to be invited into a new mom’s world to capture their first sacred and vulnerable moments navigating this new role in life. I especially love doing two-part maternity/newborn sessions because I feel like I get to document two seminal times in a woman’s life, and be a small part of their entrance into motherhood. As I photographed LA based stylist Melinda Tarbell and her family, my spirit was ignited by their deep love for one another. Such a gift to witness this new family make their way through the initial terrain of parenthood—I’m so grateful that they allowed me see them in all of their human glory. When everything comes together during a session, it feels like a dance, I can almost start to hear music, and time flies by in an uncanny way. This amazing new little family were stellar dance partners, and I loved capturing a little piece of the magic.
